This is a One Name Study to collect together in one place everything about one surname and the variants of that name. The hope is that other researchers like you will join our study to help make it a valuable reference point for people studying lines that cross or intersect. Please contact the project leader, add categories to your profiles, add your questions to the bulletin board, add details of your name research, etc.

ALL WELCOME The study and research of the Surname KINSEY within the United Kingdom

Origins It is unlikely that any Kinsey today is descended from the bearers of the name in Saxon Times, though the name is of Saxon origin where it is used primary as a Christian name, as such it went out of use before the end of the 11th Century, which would indicate that it was already being used as a surname. The earliest mention we have after the 1066 is for Richard Kynsey of Wynbunbury in 1260, Richard was a Rector which would indicate that he may have been the youngest son of the family, did the family get the name from Kinsey Heath on the Cheshire, Shropshire border, or was he a newcomer (or his ancestor) to the area, say from a Saxon area of Europe, who came over after William in 1066, maybe a mercenary soldier in 1085 army that William raised to stop the Danish invasion threat, or one of a long line of Kinsey’s descended from a pre-conquest family who previously had gone unrecorded. In the United Kingdom it is likely that most of Kinsey’s are descended from the three Kinsey’s mentions in 1398, Robert, Thomas and William, (which is either three brothers, children of Robert or Robert and two sons),especially the families based around Warmingham, Middlewich, Blackden and Lower Peover areas of Cheshire from the mid 16th Century.

It is primary a Cheshire name, from where it spread.

On a map of Cheshire, if you draw a Line from Northwich across to Knutsford and then down to just below Middlewich and then back up to Northwich, forming a triangle virtually all early references to the Kinsey family are contained in this triangle.

Variations.Kinsey, Kynsey, Kensey, Kinsy, Kynsy, Kyncy, Kincey, Kinsie, Kynsei, Kinsuis, Kynsee, Kyngsey, Kensaye, Cynesige, Cynsige, Kinsye, etc. The general accepted spelling today is Kinsey, though one branch uses Kynsey
